Independence Day Cocktails and Cigar Pairings

June 24, 2025 Inspector X 6 min read

Cigars and fine liquor are a natural pairing, enhancing each other’s complexity and depth. Whether it’s a rich whisky, a smooth rum, or a refined cognac, the right drink can elevate the cigar experience, and vice versa. This synergy is so profound that some cigar brands take it a step further, aging their tobacco in liquor barrels to infuse their cigars with unique flavours.

Several iconic collaborations between cigar and liquor brands have emerged from this shared passion for craftsmanship. Maker’s Mark, for example, offers cigars housed in their signature wax-sealed tubes, while Drew Estate has partnered with Pappy Van Winkle and even crafted Kahlua-flavoured cigars in the past. General Cigars has teamed up with Sazerac, resulting in creations like Fireball cigars and Weller by Cohiba, alongside partnerships with Buffalo Trace. Diesel’s Whisky Row cigars, produced in collaboration with Rabbit Hole Distilleries, are another fine example of this harmonious relationship.

Cuban cigars have also embraced this trend, with Cohiba famously collaborating with Martell Cognac. In Europe, Dominique London, a luxury retailer, has gone even further by acquiring a distillery in Wales, producing their own whisky, gin, rum, and other liquors to pair with their cigars.

Pairing cigars with liquor creates a world of possibilities for the discerning connoisseur, allowing both the cigar and the spirit to shine through their complementary flavours. This rich tradition continues to inspire new partnerships and innovations, providing endless enjoyment for enthusiasts.

Independence Day

The 4th of July—America’s Independence Day—is a celebration filled with fireworks, patriotism, and classic backyard barbecues featuring hamburgers, hotdogs, and, of course, cigars. While beer often makes an appearance, why not elevate the occasion with cocktails that perfectly complement your cigars?

These festive drinks are not only ideal for traditional American gatherings but some even sport patriotic colours or names, adding an extra touch of Independence Day spirit to your celebration. Ditch the usual Bud Light and raise a glass to freedom with these delicious 4th of July cocktail pairings!

Army & Navy

Let’s start with a drink that celebrates the armed forces, Army & Navy. It sounds pretty patriotic, doesn’t it? The Army & Navy cocktail was created to commemorate the historic rivalry between the United States Army and Navy academies in their iconic football game. Like many classic drinks, its exact origins are a bit murky. This bright and nutty blend of gin, lemon juice, and orgeat has also been linked to The Army and Navy Club in Washington, D.C., a prestigious officers’ club where the Daiquiri made its U.S. debut.

While the club doesn’t have definitive records of the cocktail’s creation, it likely played a significant role in popularising the Army & Navy, which continues to hold a place on the club’s cocktail menu to this day. A timeless tribute to tradition, the Army & Navy remains a favourite among cocktail enthusiasts.

The nose is a nice mixture of lemon and almonds from the orgeat. The cocktail is lemon forward but well balanced by the orgeat and the Angostura bitters. I paired this with a San Cristobal aka Paradiso and it was bliss.

And now for the Army & Navy recipe:
60ml London Dry gin

30ml Lemon Juice
22½ml Orgeat
1 dash Angostura Bitters

Add all ingredients into a shaker with ice and shake until well-chilled. Strain into a chilled coupe and garnish with a grapefruit twist

Firecracker

Firecrackers are synonymous with the 4th of July, United Cigars has a whole series of limited editions, released before Independence Day, named Firecracker. These small cigars mimic the looks of a firecracker and over the years all the big names in the industry have made one for them. So, a cocktail with this name fits the occasion too.

The nose has a bit of smoke from the pepper, with the funk of the rum but the lemon is completely lost. The cocktail is summer, refreshing, with the watermelon adding sweetness and flavour, the funk from the rum shines with a little tart from the lime and triple sec. This needs a cigar with earthy tones.

And now for the Firecracker recipe:
2 1-inch cubes of watermelon
45ml Aged Rum
15ml Triple Sec
15ml Lime Juice
15ml Simple Syrup
a pinch cayenne pepper

Muddle the watermelon in the bottom of a shaker. Add all the other ingredients and ice. Shake and strain into a coupe or cocktail glass. Garnish with a lime wedge

Bourbon Strawberry Iced Tea

On a scorching summer day, few beverages rival the refreshing appeal of a chilled glass—or even a pitcher—of iced tea. But when the occasion calls for something a touch more sophisticated, bourbon steps in as the ideal companion. Sweetened with fruit and sugar and balanced by the tart brightness of freshly squeezed lemon—a classic iced tea staple—this combination transforms into the ultimate summer cocktail.

After all, iced tea is quintessentially American, and what could be more fittingly patriotic than pairing it with bourbon? The result is a harmonious and satisfying libation, perfect for sipping under the summer sun.

The iced tea is dominating the nose, it even overpowers the lemon juice. The iced lemon tea is also is also the main flavour, with the caramel notes of the Maker’s Mark bourbon on the background providing depth and something different than a regular iced tea. It’s great for a 4th of July garden or block party before the barbecue is lit. After the feeding frenzy, I would pick the bourbon without the iced tea. But since this is a mid-afternoon cocktail, I would go with a mild to medium bodied, nice and creamy cigar. Something with a bigger ring gauge too.

and now for the Bourbon Strawberry Iced Tea recipe:
2 large fresh strawberries (sliced into quarters)
60ml Bourbon
30ml of Lemon Juice
22½ml of Rich Simple syrup
Unsweetened iced tea to top
Garnish: blueberries, strawberries and a mint sprig
Add the strawberries and lemon juice into a shaker and gently muddle. Add the bourbon and simple syrup, add ice, and shake until well-chilled. Strain into a Collins glass over fresh ice. Top with unsweetened iced tea. Garnish with skewered blueberries and strawberries and a mint sprig.
