Cigar Preferences: How to Find Your Ideal Puff

October 20, 2025 Inspector X 2 min read

Walking into a cigar store can feel overwhelming—hundreds of options, each with different flavors, shapes, strengths, and price tags. Even seasoned smokers can have trouble picking the perfect cigar. Finding your ideal smoke takes a bit of thought (and a few enjoyable test runs).

  1. Body & Intensity

Cigars range from mellow to full-bodied:

  • Full-bodied: Deep, robust flavors—often preferred by those who enjoy stout beers, bold red wines, or strong coffee.
  • Mild: Smooth and easy-going—popular with fans of crisp pilsners or light white wines.
  • Mix it up: Some enjoy different intensities for different occasions, like a strong cigar after dinner and a lighter one on a relaxing afternoon.

Tip: Try singles before committing to a full box.

  1. Size & Ring Gauge

  • Measurement: Length (in inches) × ring gauge (diameter in 64ths of an inch).
  • Smoking time: A 5–6 inch cigar usually lasts about an hour.
  • Flavor impact: Smaller ring gauges (40–50) give more wrapper-to-filler ratio, often enhancing flavor. Larger gauges have more filler, which can be great with quality tobacco.
  1. Shape

  • Parejo: The classic straight shape; must be cut or punched before smoking.
  • Figurado: Non-standard shapes (often pointed ends) that can intensify flavor.

Always use the right cutter or punch for an even draw.

  1. Spotting a Quality Cigar

  • Wrapper: Smooth, clean, no tears or gaps.
  • Color: Even tone; no dark spots, mold, or discoloration.
  • Feel: Slight give when gently pressed; not dry or brittle.
  • Fill: Evenly packed with no soft spots or bulges.
  • Aroma: Inviting, rich scent—your nose knows.
  1. Remember—It’s Personal

Your perfect cigar is the one you enjoy most, regardless of trends or “expert” opinions. Exploring different styles, strengths, and origins is part of the fun.
