Cinco de Mayo Cigars
Cinco de Mayo, or the Fifth of May, is a cultural and historical celebration observed primarily in the United States and parts of Mexico. It commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, during the Franco-Mexican War. On that day, the Mexican army, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza, achieved an unexpected victory against the better-equipped and larger French forces in the town of Puebla. This battle was significant because it boosted the morale of the Mexican resistance.
Cinco de Mayo has become a symbol of Mexican pride and heritage in the U.S. It serves as an opportunity for people of all backgrounds to celebrate and learn about Mexican culture. It’s not a major holiday in most of Mexico though. The holiday is often commercialized, with businesses promoting Mexican-themed products and events, similar to how St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in honor of Irish culture.
Cinco de Mayo cigars
There are hundreds, maybe thousands, cigars with Mexican San Andres wrapper that could have made this list. But let’s dial in a bit more and focus on a few cigars that are perfect for Cinco de Mayo, either through heritage or the theme.
Casa Turrent
If you write about Mexican cigars there is one brand that you have to include: Casa Turrent. The Turrent family has been involved in the Mexican tobacco industry since 1880 and is the biggest and most important tobacco grower in the country. Excluding Casa Turrent in this list would be excluding fireworks from a list of 4th of July essentials.
Casa 1910
This Mexican brand is relatively new, but due to their extensive network the cigars are available in a lot of international markets and the United States. All the cigars are named after historical figures and battles in Mexican history, and that fits perfectly with the history of Cinco de Mayo.
Rojas Street Tacos
These might prove a little hard to get, but if you can get your hands on them, the Rojas Street Tacos are perfect for Cinco de Mayo. Noel Rojas isn’t Mexican though, he’s a Cuban refugee and the master blender making great cigars in Mexico and selling them mostly in Texas. His Street Tacos line celebrates the Mexican culture and the blends under the Street Tacos umbrella carry names as Carnitas, Barbacoa and even Cinco de Mayo.
