Cuban Cigar Smoker Tries a New World Cigar: Padrón Black PB-97 Maduro
The Padrón Black PB-97 Maduro Torpedo is a limited-edition Nicaraguan puro released in 2023 to mark José Orlando Padrón’s 97th birthday — and it breaks tradition by not being box-pressed.
This cigar is part of the rare “Padrón Black” series and was made exclusively available to retailers who attended the 2023 PCA trade show. Rolled in a 6¾ x 54 torpedo format, it’s one of the only Padrón cigars in recent memory that comes in a round, non–box-pressed shape. For a brand that built its visual identity around sharp edges and squared-off construction, this alone makes the PB-97 stand out.
In this video, I continue the Cuban Cigar Smoker Tries a New World Cigar series by putting the PB-97 to the test. It’s a cigar I’ve wanted to try for a long time — not just because it’s rare, but because it ticks a lot of boxes: Nicaraguan tobacco, Maduro wrapper, torpedo shape, and most importantly, no box-press. If you’re someone who, like me, prefers the feel and burn of a traditional round cigar, this one might already have your attention.
While the PB-97 is still available in very limited quantities, it’s getting harder to find and prices are climbing. Retail was around $40 USD per cigar when it launched, but availability now depends on luck, timing, and knowing the right shops. Whether you’re curious about what sets it apart or just want to see how it holds up in real-world conditions, this video gives a first-hand look at one of Padrón’s most talked-about limited releases in recent years.
