Five Great Books for Cigar Enthusiasts: A Must-Read List – Part 1

March 28, 2025 Inspector X 5 min read

For cigar lovers, few things can enhance the pleasure of smoking a fine cigar like pairing it with a great read. This list highlights five exceptional books that offer a deep dive into the world of cigars, from detailed technical insights to captivating brand histories.

1. From Soil to Soul – Didier Houvenaghel

This is the definitive guide for anyone interested in the intricate process of cigar making, written by Belgian agricultural engineer Didier Houvenaghel. “From Soil to Soul” delves into the journey of a tobacco seed, exploring every stage from planting to the final rolled product. With over 20 years of research, this book covers a comprehensive range of topics, offering an unmatched level of detail.

The updated 2022 edition spans more than 300 pages and includes around 100 hand-drawn, full-colour illustrations, making it visually appealing as well as educational. The two-part book is available in a standard slipcase set, as well as a deluxe edition featuring bamboo covers and a bamboo slipcase. It is not just a book but a collector’s item for those deeply interested in the art of cigar making. Houvenaghel’s background, including his studies in Cuba and his collaboration with cigar giant A.J. Fernandez on his own brands like Nicarao and La Ley, adds an authentic touch to the narrative.

Order the book straight from the author and have it signed while you’re at it.

2. Joya de Nicaragua Cinco Décadas – Nick Hammond

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Joya de Nicaragua, this book, penned by British author Nick Hammond, is a tribute to Nicaragua’s oldest cigar manufacturer. “Cinco Décadas” is not just a brand story but a rich historical account that intertwines the development of the company with the socio-political evolution of Nicaragua.

Through the 204 pages and eleven chapters, the book takes readers on a journey through the post-colonial era, highlighting the struggles of the 20th century and the resurgence of the Nicaraguan cigar industry. It features interviews with the people behind the brand, sharing personal stories and experiences that shaped the company’s legacy. This beautifully illustrated book is a must-read for fans of Nicaraguan cigars and those interested in the broader history of the region’s cigar-making tradition.

3. Partagas El Libro – Amir Saarony

Amir Saarony’s “Partagas El Libro” is a thorough exploration of one of the most famous cigar brands in the world. Released in 2013 after years of meticulous research, the book chronicles the history of Partagás from its founder Jaime Partagás y Rabell’s arrival in Cuba in 1831 to its state in the 21st century.

Spanning 272 pages, this richly detailed book includes over 800 images, offering a visual feast for readers. It covers the lives of the brand’s various owners, including intriguing stories like Jaime Partagás’s conviction for forging another brand’s cigars. The book also features insights from Simon Chase, a renowned expert on Cuban cigars, adding an authoritative perspective. Whether you are a Partagás fan or simply a lover of Cuban cigars, this book provides an engaging read on the history, quality control, and factory life of this iconic brand.

4. Cigaragua: The Book – Marcel Langedijk

“Cigaragua” fills a gap in cigar literature by focusing on the booming Nicaraguan cigar industry, rather than the typical Cuban narratives. Conceptualised by Dutch cigar distributor Sasja van Horssen and brought to life by author Marcel Langedijk, the book is a result of extensive travels and interviews conducted in Estelí, Nicaragua.

Released in 2015, the book features stunning photographs by Jesaja Hizkia and engaging stories from leading cigar manufacturers like Oliva, My Father Cigars, and Drew Estate. It provides a unique glimpse into the vibrant culture and rich tradition of Nicaraguan cigar making, making it a must-have for those interested in exploring the dynamic cigar landscape outside of Cuba. The book is complemented by the opening of a cigar store in Amsterdam’s museum district, named after the book itself, showcasing the growing appreciation for Nicaraguan cigars.

The only place I could find the books for sale online is in the United Kingdom where Cgars Ltd has it on their website but the Cigaragua shop in Amsterdam has stock as well.

5. Cigar Family: A 100-Year Journey in the Cigar Industry – Sanford Newman & James Miller

This is the oldest title on our list, published in 1999, but its timeless appeal makes it a must-read for anyone interested in American cigar history. “Cigar Family” chronicles the 100-year history of the J.C. Newman Cigar Company, one of the few remaining family-owned cigar businesses in the United States.

The book, spanning 231 pages, tells the compelling story of the Newman family’s journey from their humble beginnings in a garage to becoming a global name in the cigar industry. Co-authored by Sanford Newman and James Miller, with input from Marvin Shanken, the publisher of Cigar Aficionado, the book captures the essence of the American cigar boom and the resilience of the Newman family. It is a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit and dedication that shaped the landscape of the cigar industry in the U.S.
