How New World Cigars Are Changing the European Market

January 24, 2025 Usman Dawood 2 min read

The cigar world, once defined by Cuban cigars, is undergoing a notable shift as New World cigars from regions like Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, and Honduras reshape what smokers value in flavor, experience, and accessibility.

In a conversation with JB from Belgium’s Cigar Lounge 33, we discussed how these changes are influencing customer preferences and the retail landscape.

When JB opened his lounge in 2019, Cuban cigars accounted for 70% of his stock. Today, that figure has dropped to just 10%. This isn’t due to a lack of demand—Cuban cigars remain highly sought after. However, supply chain disruptions, rising prices, and limited availability have pushed both retailers and consumers to explore alternatives. JB shared how his customers, initially hesitant, began embracing New World cigars for their diverse blends, unique flavor profiles, and innovative offerings.

This transformation goes beyond inventory. It’s about how retailers adapt to meet the evolving needs of their customers. At Lounge 33, JB and his team focus on building personal connections with their clientele, learning their preferences to recommend cigars that often exceed expectations. New World cigars have become more than just substitutes—they’ve opened the door to a wider range of experiences and discovery.

The shift also reflects a generational trend. Younger smokers, often priced out of Cuban cigars, are gravitating toward new brands and regions, embracing the exploratory nature of cigar culture.

This interview provides an in-depth look at how the cigar industry is changing across Europe.
