My Father Cigars acquires Fonseca

My Father Cigars acquires Fonseca. In a move that hardly anybody saw coming, the Garcia’s bought the brand. Fonseca Cigars have been made by the Quesada family since 1974. This purchase does not mean that My Father Cigars is moving to the Dominican Republic. My Father Cigars Fonsecas will be made at the My Father Cigars factory in Esteli, Nicaragua.

Fonseca is one of the Cuban brands with a new world counterpart for the United States. Most of those brands are now in the hands of two major players. General Cigars and Imperial Brands own most of the copyrights. Fonseca was, and remains, one of the few that still haven’t been picked up by the two large corporations. Many of the new world counterparts of the Cuban brands were reboots by the original owners. After the Castro revolution and his government stole the brands, brand owners rebooted in other countries. Cuba could not register the brands in the United States due to the embargo. It also means that My Father Cigars made Fonseca’s will only be available in the United States.

Quesada & the Garcia family

It is not the first time that the two families work together. The daughter of Don Pepin Garcia, Janny, and the daughters of Manolo Quesada, Raquel and Patricia, released a limited edition before. That cigar was called Tres Reynas, the 3 queens.

The sale will further fuel the unconfirmed rumors that Quesada Cigars isn’t in good shape. At the last Intertabac trade show, the room was filled with rumors. Soon after the trade show, Patricia Quesada announced her departure from the family business. Quesada Cigars has been in business since 1974 and the family has been in tobacco for generations. Manolo Quesada is featured in the great Hand Rolled documentary. We hope that there is no base for the rumors and that the Quesada family will continue their legacy for generations to come.

The new blends

The Garcia family said that they will update the blend of the cigar and give it some Garcia touch. When the new blends will hit the market has not yet been revealed. Just like the exact blend and the vitolas are still a question mark. Time will tell.

In the recent past, My Father Cigars resurrected old Cuban brands. Brands that were long gone and forgotten. Flor de Las Antillas, La Antiguedad, La Gran Oferta, and La Opulencia fall under this category. it will be the first time that the company is using a brand name of a still active Cuban marca. Although My Father Cigars is responsible for Ashton’s San Cristobal line as well.
