Tabacalera de García opened a new facilities that is  dedicated exclusively to handmade cigars manufacturing, with 2,100 employees and a capacity of production that exceeds 40 million sticks per year.

The Tabacalera Group has split off the British group Imperial Brands today with the formal purchase of the new facilities of Tabacalera de Garcia, the biggest cigar factory in Dominican Republic. The new factory will be dedicated exclusively to handmade cigars, with four manufacturing halls and 1,000 rollers. The total number of employees is 2,100.

The operation part of the process that started in 2020. The premium cigar division of Imperial Brands was up for sale, while the machine made division would still be for Imperial. That could only be done if the facilities were split and if the ownership of the handmade cigar facilities was changed

Fernando Dominguez, CEO of the Tabacalera Group, stated that “with the entry of Tabacalera de García into the group, the factory is at the epicentre of the business due to its relevance, because the art of making cigars is the essence of the business and because it represents the most important group of people in the company”.

The new industrial complex will retain the name of “Tabacalera de García”, one of the largest handmade cigars factories in the world, while the primitive facilities, still owned by Imperial Brands, will be dedicated to the production of machine made cigars and will operate under the name of “Imperial Tobacco la Romana”.

Tabacalera, heir of the old Spanish tobacco monopoly (created in 1636) is the leading business group in the premium cigars market worldwide. With operations in more than 150 countries through a powerful distribution network, Tabacalera has a prestigious portfolio of brands in the sector, that includes all the well-known Cuban brands – such as Cohiba, Montecristo, Partagás and Romeo y Julieta – by participating 50% in Corporación Habanos SA. The Group is headquartered in Madrid, Spain, and has more than 5,000 employees around the world and cigar factories in the Dominican Republic, Honduras and Cuba (ICT). Their best known Non Cuban brand is VegaFina.
