Habanos S.A. Set to Launch Bolívar Regentes: A Look at the World of Cuban Edición Limitada Releases
Over the past two decades, Habanos S.A. has typically revealed three new Edición Limitada releases each year. These releases feature a novel size for a specific brand, introducing a size not previously associated with that particular brand. While not necessarily an entirely new Cuban cigar size, these offerings are unique to the respective brands. As the name suggests, these cigars are produced in limited quantities, although the exact production numbers are seldom disclosed.
In 2021, the trio included the Cohiba 55 Anniversario (5 9/10 x 57), Hoyo de Monterrey Monterreyes No.4 (5 7/10 x 55), and the Bolívar Regentes (5 1/8 x 52). The Cohiba was launched in 2022, the Hoyo de Monterrey was released earlier this year with a delay of ‘only’ two years, and the Bolívar is slated to debut next year, 2024, 3 years after the year it should have been released.
Hunters & Frankau, the U.K.’s distributor of Cuban cigars, has announced a global launch party for the Bolívar Regentes on Feb. 7, 2024, at the Boisdale Canary Wharf in London. Pricing details for both the event and the cigar are yet to be disclosed. Typically, Habanos S.A. designates a distributor to host a launch event, making them the first to offer the cigars to retail stores. Other distributors and markets subsequently receive the cigars on various later dates.
The Bolívar Regentes boasts a 5 1/8 (130mm) x 52 Parejo size, known as Discretos within the Cuban naming system. The Partagás Maduro No.1 is the only other Cuban cigar made in this vitola. Edición Limitada cigars, apart from featuring unique sizes, utilize tobacco from the Vuelta Abajo region of Pinar del Río, aged for a minimum of two years. They are identified by a secondary band that reads “Edición Limitada” along with the year of announcement.
Over the past five years, the gap between the announcement of Edición Limitada cigars and their availability has widened significantly. Unlike previous years when the first shipments were delivered either in the announcement year or the early months of the following year, recent trends indicate a multi-year gap between announcement and release.
Notably, there were no Edición Limitada cigars as part of the 2022 line-up. Initially planned for H. Upmann, Ramón Allones, and Trinidad, these cigars were reclassified and are now designated as part of the 2023 class of Edición Limitada cigars:
• H. Upmann Magnum Finite — 5 1/8 (130mm) x 53 (Singulares)
• Ramón Allones Absolutos — 6 3/8 (162mm) x 47 (Cazadores Especiales)
• Trinidad Cablidos — 6 1/8 (156mm) x 49 (Nuevos)
Details regarding the release date of these cigars are yet to be announced.
