Luis Tiant: A Legacy of Baseball and Cigars

October 9, 2024 Inspector X 2 min read

Before athletes like David Ortiz and Mike Ditka became linked to cigars, there was Luis Tiant. The Cuban-born pitching legend passed away on October 8 at the age of 83.

Tiant is most famously associated with his eight seasons with the Boston Red Sox, though his career spanned nearly two decades. During that time, he racked up over 2,416 strikeouts, pitched 47 shutouts, and threw nearly 3,500 innings. A three-time All-Star and two-time American League ERA leader, Tiant firmly established himself as one of baseball’s premier pitchers.

Though he has been inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame, Tiant has yet to receive the honour of being enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. His legacy, however, remains influential, especially as a pioneering Cuban athlete who navigated the complexities of playing in the U.S. during the rise of Fidel Castro. His story has been captured in several books and the documentary The Lost Son of Havana.

Born in Marianao, a suburb of Havana, in 1940, Tiant’s baseball journey began when he was discovered by a Cleveland Indians scout. Before reaching the Major Leagues, he played in the Mexican League. Throughout his career, he played for several teams, including the Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, and California Angels, retiring in 1982 after a stellar career.

A well-known cigar enthusiast, Tiant would often smoke before and after games, though never while pitching. After retiring, he launched his own cigar brand, El Tiante, in 2011. Initially produced with Tabacalera Tambor and later moved to My Father Cigars S.A., the brand struggled to gain a foothold despite his efforts.

“Today we lost a great man,” said Mike Bellody, former president of Tiant Cigar Group, LLC. “Luis was one of the kindest humans I’ve ever known.”
