Bentley Tobacco Launches AI Cigar Project with Consumer Survey
Bentley Tobacco, a German cigar company with a U.S. subsidiary led by Jonathan Carney, is stepping into the future of cigar-making by launching The AI Cigar Project. This initiative promises to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into the cigar creation process, merging cutting-edge technology with the artistry of traditional cigar craftsmanship. However, before the project moves forward, the company is turning to cigar enthusiasts for feedback through an extensive 30+ question survey.
The survey, available on the project’s newly launched website, aims to gather detailed insights into consumers’ preferences. While half of the questions focus on purchasing habits, others delve into the design aspects of cigars, asking about preferred shapes, smoking characteristics, and countries of origin. Bentley Tobacco plans to feed this data into an AI model that has already been developed, which will analyse consumer preferences and help conceptualize the ideal blend.
According to Bentley, the AI will interpret the data, identifying trends and nuances in consumer preferences. The system will then propose a conceptual cigar blend. However, it’s important to note that this won’t be a cigar created solely by AI. The process will culminate with master blenders stepping in to take the AI’s insights and apply their expertise to create the final product.
“Once the survey and analysis phase are complete, master blenders will lead the creation of the cigar itself,” said Bentley in a press release. “This fusion of AI-driven insights and master craftsmanship is set to redefine the cigar experience.”
Bentley plans to unveil the results of The AI Cigar Project at the 2025 PCA Convention & Trade Show, set to take place from April 12-14 in New Orleans. According to Carney, the project represents a bold move forward for the industry.
“The AI Cigar Project is more than just a new product,” said Carney. “It’s an opportunity to celebrate the evolving tastes of cigar enthusiasts everywhere and an exciting leap forward for the industry. By uniting tradition and technology, we’re poised to craft something truly remarkable.”
This isn’t Carney’s first foray into AI. He is also a co-founder of Shoulder of Giants, an AI-focused consulting firm, further emphasizing his dedication to bringing innovative technology into traditional industries.
As the cigar industry embraces technological advancements, Bentley’s AI Cigar Project is set to offer a unique, consumer-driven cigar that promises to marry innovation with heritage, making it a significant step for both cigar aficionados and the cigar-making world.
