Exclusive Aged H. Upmann No. 2 Released for Spain

December 6, 2024 Inspector X 2 min read

Habanos has unveiled a limited-edition release of its famed H. Upmann No. 2 cigars exclusively for the Spanish market, sparking debate over its unique “vintage” concept. These cigars, rolled in 2022—the same year they were crowned Cigar Aficionado’s Cigar of the Year—are presented with special packaging and a hefty price increase. And come on, calling 2 year old cigars “vintage” is ridiculous, there is no other way to describe this money-grab by Tabacalera and Habanos.

For those struggling to find Cuban H. Upmann No. 2s, a trip to Spain might be worth considering. Tabacalera S.L.U., the country’s Habanos distributor, has repackaged its 2022 production into bespoke boxes for this exclusive release. The year holds significance as the H. Upmann No. 2 earned its No. 1 ranking that year, elevating its demand and rarity.

The H. Upmann No. 2, measuring 6 1/8 inches by 52 ring gauge, shares its dimensions with the iconic Montecristo No. 2 but is milder and produced in much smaller quantities. Since earning the top spot, its scarcity has only increased.

For this limited release, Tabacalera opted for a more refined presentation. Instead of standard dress boxes, the cigars come in elegant 22-count boxes with contoured edges and a glossy, deep-red finish. Each cigar is adorned with a bold vintage foot band, marking them as part of the Selección 2022.

However, the “vintage” designation comes at a price. These cigars retail for 30 euros each (approximately $31.75), a 48.5% premium over the regular-production H. Upmann No. 2, which sells for 20.20 euros ($21.35). With only 1,000 boxes produced, this release is poised to attract collectors and enthusiasts, despite the inflated cost.

Whether you view it as a savvy marketing move or a questionable take on the vintage concept, the Selección 2022 highlights the enduring allure of Cuban cigars in global markets.
