Eladio Diaz to Release 72 Aniversario “North and South” Edition Cigar

May 19, 2025 Inspector X 2 min read

Eladio Diaz is marking his 72nd birthday with a new limited-edition cigar, the 72 Aniversario North and South Edition, crafted entirely from Dominican tobacco. The release begins shipping on 19 May in boxes of 12 cigars, priced at $25 each.

Eladio Diaz Celebrates 72nd Birthday with All-Dominican Aniversario Cigar

Eladio Diaz, one of the Dominican Republic’s most respected cigar makers, is continuing his personal tradition of birthday blends with the 72 Aniversario North and South Edition, a cigar that pays homage not just to his career but to the rich diversity of Dominican tobacco. Set to begin shipping on 19 May, this limited release will be available in boxes of 12 cigars, each measuring 6 1/2 x 52 and priced at $25.

This celebratory cigar is a special project from Tabacalera Diaz Cabrera (TDC), the factory Diaz founded after decades of work at the Davidoff factory. While Diaz has crafted private birthday blends since his 50th, they were never commercially available until 2023, when he released the 70 Aniversario. Since then, his annual birthday cigars have become eagerly anticipated by enthusiasts.

The 72 Aniversario North and South Edition is named for its unique composition: 100% Dominican tobacco sourced from both the northern and southern regions of the country. The cigar features a Corojo-seed wrapper from San Juan de la Maguana in the south—an area that Diaz says hasn’t been used for tobacco since the 1970s but holds untapped potential. The binder is a Mexican-seed Negro San Andrés leaf grown in Navarette in the north. The filler blend is complex, including Negrito, Corojo ’99, Criollo ’98, Havana Vuelta Abajo, and Piloto Cubano—all Dominican-grown.

Diaz’s decision to revive San Juan de la Maguana as a tobacco-growing region is particularly noteworthy. His commitment to exploring its viability adds historical depth and agricultural innovation to an already meaningful release.

With only 2,500 boxes being produced, the 72 Aniversario is expected to be a collector’s item and a tribute to Diaz’s expertise in Dominican leaf. For cigar lovers who appreciate craftsmanship rooted in heritage and terroir, this is a birthday blend well worth celebrating.
