OZ Family Cigars Unleashes Karatoba: A Dark, Full-Bodied Volcano-Inspired Blend

Karatoba, the boldest release yet from OZ Family Cigars, lands at retailers this week. Named after a supervolcano, it promises a deep, evolving flavour journey with rich Nicaraguan character.

OZ Family Cigars has unveiled its most powerful blend to date—Karatoba—a dark, complex smoke inspired by ancient geological fury and rich cultural roots. Shipping now to retailers across the U.S., Karatoba is the latest creation from brand owner Tim Ozgener, whose new blend combines storytelling, heritage, and bold Nicaraguan flavour in one explosive package.

The name Karatoba blends the Turkish word for “dark” (kara) with Lake Toba, the massive caldera in Indonesia formed by a supervolcano some 73,000 years ago. Though the volcano is dormant, its legacy of destruction and transformation serves as the metaphor for this intense, full-bodied blend. Ozgener—whose father was Turkish—chose the name to honour both the dark wrapper and his cultural roots.

“I wanted something that immediately hits the palate and evolves with every puff,” Ozgener said. “Karatoba takes you on a ride of complex, shifting flavours.”

While there’s no Indonesian tobacco in the mix, the wrapper pays homage with Ecuador-grown leaf from Sumatra seed. The binder is Nicaraguan, and the filler combines Nicaraguan and Dominican tobaccos, delivering a layered, spicy profile that evolves as you smoke.

Karatoba is handcrafted in Nicaragua by NACSA (Nicaraguan American Cigars S.A.) and distributed by Crowned Heads. The line launches in four sizes, all in 21-count boxes:
