Hoyo de Monterrey Launches New Le Hoyo de San Luís in Germany
A new Cuban Hoyo—the Le Hoyo de San Luís—has debuted in Germany, expanding the modern Le Hoyo range with a medium-bodied 52-ring cigar made entirely from San Luís tobacco.
A New Addition to the Le Hoyo Series
Fifth Avenue Products Trading GmbH, the exclusive distributor of Cuban cigars for Germany, Austria and Poland, hosted the global debut of the Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo de San Luís. The launch marks the latest expansion of the historic Le Hoyo line, a series that has received renewed attention in recent years.
A New Size for a Classic Brand
The Le Hoyo de San Luís measures just over 6 3/8 inches with a 52 ring gauge. In Cuban factories, the format carries the name fragrancias. The cigar comes in boxes of 10, and Habanos S.A. classifies the profile as medium-bodied. Pricing details have not yet been announced.
A Tribute to San Luís
The cigar takes its name from San Luís, one of the most esteemed growing regions in Pinar del Río. The area is home to Cuchillas de Barbacoa—the Robaina farm—widely regarded as the most famous tobacco estate in Cuba.
According to Habanos S.A., every leaf in the new cigar is sourced from San Luís, including the wrapper, binder and filler. This single-region approach creates a strong connection between the cigar and the terroir that defines Cuba’s finest tobacco.
The Le Hoyo Series Through the Years
The Le Hoyo Series dates back to the 1940s. The original releases featured slim ring gauges and a stronger character than typical Hoyo de Monterrey cigars. Early vitolas included:
Le Hoyo du Maire (30 ring)
Le Hoyo du Gourmet (33 ring)
Le Hoyo de Dauphin and Du Député (38 ring)
Le Hoyo des Dieux (42 ring)
Le Hoyo du Prince (40 ring)
Le Hoyo du Roi (42 ring)
Many of these formats have been discontinued, though some—like the Du Député—can still be found in Havana for under $8 per stick.
Modern Expansions
In 2014, Habanos relaunched the series with the thicker Le Hoyo de San Juan, a cigar with a 54 ring gauge. The Le Hoyo de Rio Seco followed in 2018 with a 56 ring gauge. Both cigars earned strong reviews and helped reintroduce the line to a global audience.
With the Le Hoyo de San Luís, Habanos brings the series back toward a slimmer format, though the 52 ring gauge remains far larger than many original sizes.
Wider Distribution Expected
While Germany hosted the initial release, the Le Hoyo de San Luís is expected to reach additional international markets in the near future. Collectors and Hoyo fans will likely view the cigar as a significant and eagerly awaited addition to the brand’s evolving portfolio.
