Altadis to Add 6th Vitola to Henry Clay War Hawk Line
Altadis is adding a 6th vitola to the Henry Clay War Hawk line in the shape of a large Churchill. It is the fourth regular production vitola, the two others were limited editions.
The cigars are made at the Flor de Copan factory in Honduras with Honduran filler under a Connecticut Broadleaf binder and an Ecuadorian Connecticut shade wrapper. The size is 7×56, which is slightly thicker than a standard Churchill, and according to Altadis, the cigar is stronger and spicier than the colour suggests.
The Henry Clay brand is an old Cuban brand from the 1800s, founded by Julian Alvarez but bought over by the American Tobacco Co. When the Castro clan took power and nationalized the brand, it severely cut into the number of vitolas. The US trademark became available in 1986 and the Consolidated Cigar Corporation began making non-Cuban Henry Clay cigars. Consolidated ultimately became part of Altadis, and the cigars are still being produced. Henry Clay was a politician, and as speaker of the house he often favoured war over diplomacy.
