Arturo Fuente and Meerapfel End Decades-Long Partnership

September 25, 2025 Inspector X 2 min read

Arturo Fuente Cigar Co. and the Meerapfel family have ended their long-standing partnership. For over 30 years, Meerapfel supplied Fuente with Cameroon wrapper, used most famously in the Don Carlos line.

End of a Historic Relationship

The Meerapfel family, through M. Meerapfel Söhn, has been one of the world’s leading suppliers of premium Cameroon tobacco. Fuente relied on this leaf for many of its most celebrated cigars.

Jeremiah Meerapfel reflected on the partnership in a statement:

“The two families have a history together spanning three generations. Meerapfel is incredibly proud of what we have been able to achieve for the Fuente family. Unfortunately, Fuente and Meerapfel have ceased trading together.”

He expressed disappointment, describing the decision as the close of an important chapter in both companies’ histories.

Signs of Separation

Speculation about a split began last month. Fuente circulated a memo to overseas retailers stating it was ending its international distribution agreement with the Meerapfels. This move fuelled rumours of a broader separation, which have now been confirmed.

Lack of Clarity on the Decision

Cigar Inspector reached out to both companies for clarification. While neither side provided full details, each suggested the other initiated the break. For now, no official explanation has been given.

Impact on Fuente’s Portfolio

The departure of Meerapfel as a supplier raises questions about future production of cigars that depend on Cameroon wrapper. The Don Carlos line, long admired for its complexity and balance, has been especially tied to this tobacco. A spokesperson for Fuente did reveal that Fuente has several years of stocks available and for the short term, there won’t be any implications.

What Fuente plans to do next remains unclear, but this separation marks a turning point for one of the most influential relationships in premium cigars.
