Crowned Heads announces new Las Calaveras Edición Limitada. As usual, the cigars are produced in Esteli, Nicaragua at the factory of the Garcia family, My Father Cigars S.A. For this year, a brand new blend was made. Unlike in previous occasions, it wasn’t a recreation of the original Las Calaveras blend. The details of the blend have not been disclosed yet. The prices, the release date, and the number of cigars produced is also a secret for now.
The only thing that has been confirmed is the sizes. These will be a 5½x48 LC48, a 5×52 LC52, a 6×56 LC56, and a 6⅛x52 Torpedo. The Torpedo is a size that won’t be released in boxes. It will only be available in a sampler with the three other vitolas. This is not different than the last few Las Calaveras Edicion Limitada released by Crowned Heads
Las Calaveras
in 2014, Crowned Heads released the first Las Calaveras. It was also the first cooperation with My Father Cigars. The inspiration comes from a zinc etching by Mexican printmaker and illustrator, Jose Guadalupe Posada. The image depicts a female skeleton dressed only in a hat. It has become an icon of the Mexican Dia de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. The holiday focuses upon gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember those who have died.
Las Calaveras is an annual release that is a respectful homage to those who have passed away in the year before and is intended to be a celebration of their lives and remembrances, rather than mourning or a symbol of sadness and death. Traditionally, the cigars are packed in boxes of 24. Each box contains 3 rows of 8 cigars. The 3 rows represent life’s cycle of a beginning, middle, and end. In biblical terms, the number ‘8’ signifies new beginnings, and in mathematical terms, an ‘8’ laid on its side symbolizes “infinity,” as in eternal life.
Each annual release features a new blend, although, in some years, attempts were made to recreate the original release of the Las Calaveras Edición Limitada. That first, original, release featured Nicaraguan tobacco wrapped in an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper.
