Fire Strikes Again: Plasencia Cigars’ Operations Spared by Multiple Location Practice

March 25, 2023 Inspector L 1 min read

Not too long ago, a fire burned down the factories of Intercigar and William Ventura in the Dominican Republic and that was not the first fire to hit a tobacco company. Many manufacturers and growers have been hit by fire and last weekend Plasencia Cigars was hit by a fire too.

Plasencia has operations in Nicaragua and Honduras, on several locations to spread the risk that comes with fire hazards. But a structure at one of their locations in Nicaragua, in Ocotal, was destroyed by fire. Inside were boxes of cigars.

Hank Bischoff from Plasencia said “From a company perspective this was a minor event and yesterday we continued with production. Obviously we preferred this to not occur but are primarily happy that no person was hurt.”

About the multiple location practise he said “Sometimes this is not the most efficient system but it does address risk of loss as it did here in that we were able to commence production without a problem. Again, although we are not happy that something like this happens we are happy that not one person was injured and that the system we have worked on for many years proved effective.”
