J.C. Newman Honours Jon Cooper’s 1,000th Game with Custom Cigars
J.C. Newman Cigar Co. marked a milestone for the Tampa Bay Lightning by crafting 1,000 bespoke cigars. The cigars commemorated head coach Jon Cooper reaching his 1,000th game behind the bench.
A Milestone Night in Tampa
The celebration followed a 4–2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche. After the final horn, the Lightning presented Cooper with the cigars and a custom humidor. The initiative came at the request of Cooper’s assistant coaches.
The moment blended sport and cigar culture. Tampa’s identity as Cigar City made the tribute especially fitting.
Crafting a One-Off Cigar Tribute
J.C. Newman rolled all 1,000 cigars specifically for this occasion. Each cigar honoured a rare coaching achievement. Cooper became only the fifth coach in NHL history to lead the same team for 1,000 games.
He also stands as the longest-tenured head coach in the league. Longevity and consistency define his tenure.
Drew Newman, fourth-generation owner of J.C. Newman, highlighted the partnership’s significance. He noted the pride in supporting the Lightning as their exclusive cigar maker. The celebration, he said, reflected Tampa’s deep cigar heritage.
Cooper’s Connection to Cigars
Cooper is a known cigar enthusiast. He previously shared with Cigar Aficionado that his cigar journey began with success. Winning championships created the association. He never looked back.
That connection made the tribute personal. It also reinforced the authenticity of the gesture.
Smoking Cigars Inside an NHL Arena
Fans can enjoy cigars at J.C. Newman’s Diamond Crown Cigar Lounge. The lounge sits inside the Lightning’s Benchmark Arena. It offers a rare experience.
Cigar Aficionado reviewed the space and called it unique. It remains the only place in an NHL arena where fans can smoke cigars while watching live hockey. The lounge merges sport, leisure, and tradition.
Not for Sale
J.C. Newman delivered all 1,000 cigars directly to the Lightning. None entered commercial channels. The cigars exist solely as a commemorative gesture.
The project underscores how cigar culture continues to intersect with sport. It also reflects how milestones gain meaning through craftsmanship and shared rituals.
