J.C. Newman Releases 2026 José Gaspar Cigars in Tampa

January 15, 2026 Inspector X 2 min read

Tampa blends two iconic traditions every winter: premium cigars and the Gasparilla pirate festival. J.C. Newman Cigar Co. continues that ritual with the 2026 José Gaspar release, a limited cigar made for the season.

A Cigar Inspired by Tampa History

Cigars and Gasparilla, United

Tampa has carried the nickname “Cigar City” since 1885. Gasparilla has filled its streets with pirates since 1904. Each year, J.C. Newman links both legacies through José Gaspar.

The cigar honours a feared privateer from the late 1700s. José Gaspar sailed the Gulf of Mexico from bases near Tampa Bay. He built his legend on raids, victories, and excess. The cigar mirrors that bold spirit.

A Family Tradition Continues

Fourth-Generation Craftsmanship

J.C. Newman stands as a four-generation, family-owned cigar maker. The company traces 130 years of continuous production. Drew Newman, the current fourth-generation owner, ties the cigar to local heritage.

Gaspar celebrated victories with rich, powerful cigars. José Gaspar cigars reflect that profile. The blend targets smokers who enjoy strength with character.

Where to Buy José Gaspar in Tampa

Exclusive Local Retailers

José Gaspar cigars appear only in select Tampa locations. These include well-known cigar shops, lounges, and landmarks across the city. Retailers range from Ybor City institutions to major cigar superstores.

The cigars remain available during Gasparilla season only. Once pirates parade down Bayshore Boulevard on 31 January, the countdown begins. Stocks disappear as the festival ends. The cigar then vanishes until the following year.

Deep Roots in Cigar City

Acceptance into Tampa’s Cigar Community

After relocating to Tampa in 1954, local cigar makers welcomed J.C. Newman into the city’s inner circle. They invited Stanford J. Newman to join the Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla.

That invitation carried deep meaning. It confirmed J.C. Newman’s place in Tampa’s cigar culture. At the time, the city still held global recognition as the fine cigar capital of the world.

The José Gaspar release continues that recognition each year.
