PDR Releases Tweaked PDR 1878
PDR releases tweaked PDR 1878. PDR owner Abe Flores reblended the PDR 1878 line and gave it a new name. The new name is PDR 1878 Recordando a Santiago. That is Spanish for ‘Remembering Santiago”. Santiago is the city wherein the Dominican Republic where many cigar factories and tobacco farms are located. PDR is located in Santiago as well.
The idea
Flores came up with the new name because of the current Covid-19 Pandemic. He wants people to remember the Dominican Republic and Santiago now that travel is impossible or close to impossible. Cigar enthusiasts, retailers, and distributors are not able to travel to the Dominican Republic as before the pandemic hit. To make sure that they remember Santiago, Flores came up with the new blends and new packaging.
For the packaging, he works with the Dominican artist Fabian Barrantes. The packaging features the Monumento a Los Heroes de la restauracion and a red Cadillac. The Monumento a Los heroes de la restauracion is a famous monument in the city of Santiago. It is the highest building in Santiago and a major tourist attraction for the area. Originally it was built during the Trujillo dictatorship in his honor. But after his assassination in 1961, the new government changed it to honor the heroes of the Dominican restoration war.
Four blends
The PDR 1878 Recordando a Santiago comes in four blends, covering all aspects of the strength and flavor profile. Previously, there were six vitolas in each blend. But now there are only three left. Those are a 5×52 Robusto, 6×52 Toro, and a 6×60 Magnum. The production of each vitola is capped at 5000 boxes a year until traveling to the Dominican Republic is back to normal.
The blends are Capa Natural with an Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper. The filler and binder are Dominican. The Capa Oscuro uses Dominican filler and binder as well. The wrapper is Oscuro from Ecuador. The Capa Sun Grown uses Dominican filler and binder over an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper. The Capa Maduro also uses Dominican filler and binder, but with a Mexican San Andres Maduro wrapper.
