Plasencia Unveils High-Altitude Alma del Cielo at PCA 2025

April 14, 2025 Inspector X 2 min read

Plasencia Cigars is turning tradition upside down with Alma del Cielo, a new cigar crafted using high-altitude Nicaraguan tobacco. Grown at 3,500 feet, this blend showcases a unique terroir and marks the fourth addition to the esteemed Alma series.

In a bold move that redefines cigar tobacco cultivation, Plasencia Cigars has unveiled Alma del Cielo, a premium line that harnesses the rare qualities of high-altitude Nicaraguan farming. Introduced at the PCA 2025 Convention & Trade Show, this cigar marks the latest chapter in the acclaimed Alma series, following Alma Fuerte, Alma del Campo, and Alma del Fuego.

The name Alma del Cielo, or “Soul of the Sky,” is fitting. This unique cigar features tobacco grown on Finca San Julián, a farm perched 3,500 feet above sea level in the mountains of Nicaragua. Most cigar tobacco is grown in valleys, where warm temperatures and shade dominate. But at this elevation, the cool nights and intense sun exposure combine to create a flavour profile unlike anything found in traditional lowland fields.

There’s a specific flavour from the cold nights,” explains Nestor Andrés Plasencia, who helms the company alongside his family. The farm carries a deep personal connection—it once belonged to Nestor’s maternal grandmother, Melalina Torres, and was reclaimed by the Plasencias in 1998 as a gift from Nestor Sr. to his wife. “The soil is unbelievably rich,” says Nestor Jr., “and the water comes from a mountain spring.

All the tobacco used in Alma del Cielo is Nicaraguan and grown exclusively by the Plasencias. The blend includes high-elevation filler from San Julián and a wrapper leaf from Jalapa. The result is a medium-bodied smoke with a balanced complexity and nuanced character.

Alma del Cielo will be available in three formats:
• Celeste (4 7/8 x 52) – $25
• Boreal (6 1/8 x 54) – $27.50
• Amanecer (6 x 60, hexagonally pressed) – $29.50

Each vitola will be presented in boxes of 10, and the line is expected to become a must-try for aficionados seeking innovation grounded in tradition. Alma del Cielo is as much a tribute to nature and family as it is to the art of cigar-making—where altitude meets ancestry in a truly inspired smoke.
