Procigar Opens New Dominican Cigar Training School
Procigar and INFOTEP have opened a new vocational school in Tamboril to train future cigar artisans. The initiative aims to strengthen the Dominican premium cigar workforce and provide structured education for tobacco workers.
New Tobacco Artisan School Opens in Tamboril
The PROCIGAR–INFOTEP Escuela de Tabaqueros has officially opened its doors. The school operates in the city of Tamboril, a key cigar hub. INFOTEP partnered with Procigar to create the programme. Procigar represents leading Dominican cigar manufacturers.
INFOTEP funds vocational education through nationwide employer taxes. Previously, no cigar-making course existed within its system. Cigar factories therefore funded unrelated training sectors. Procigar addressed this imbalance through direct collaboration. The new school now channels resources into tobacco education.
Training Structure and Educational Goals
Curriculum and Industry Standards
The school teaches cigar rolling, tobacco culture and craftsmanship principles. Instructors follow international standards set by Procigar. Students learn discipline, precision and quality control. The curriculum focuses on both technique and heritage.
Industry leaders emphasise long-term sustainability. They view education as essential for maintaining global prestige. The programme preserves traditional knowledge while modernising instruction. Graduates will enter the workforce with recognised skills.
Social and Economic Impact
The initiative targets broader community benefits. Graduates will gain access to competitive employment opportunities. The programme supports families and strengthens local economies. Tobacco education also reinforces cultural identity.
Organisers highlight honourable skilled labour as a core value. They believe structured training elevates professional standards. The school positions tobacco work as a respected career path.
Facilities, Tools and Student Intake
Class Capacity and Scheduling
Each course accommodates 24 students. Classes run in the morning, afternoon and evening. Saturday sessions provide additional flexibility. The first intake includes approximately 80 students. Lessons began earlier this week.
Procigar members donated essential tools for instruction. Donations include rolling tables, cigar moulds and chavetas. INTABACO supplies the tobacco used during training. These contributions ensure practical, hands-on learning.
Post-Graduation Opportunities
Graduates may choose their preferred factory upon completion. This option includes both Procigar and non-Procigar members. The policy encourages fair competition and worker autonomy.
Procigar first announced the school’s formation in October 2024. Organisers required more than a year to finalise the programme. The extended preparation period allowed comprehensive planning and facility development.
