Quesada Cigars: A New Era for a Legendary Family Business
Quesada Cigars, a cornerstone of the cigar industry since 1974, is entering a new chapter of family ownership and leadership. After years of shared ownership within the Quesada family, the business has now come under the complete ownership of the Quesada Vega family. Led by Manuel “Manolo” Quesada Jr. and his daughters Raquel and Patricia, the company’s structure has seen a transformation, notably accelerated after Manolo’s recent health issues.
Earlier this year, Manolo suffered a stroke and subsequently moved to Spain to focus on his recovery. He has passed the leadership mantle to his daughters, marking a new phase for the Dominican cigar company. Raquel has been actively involved in Quesada Cigars over the past decade, while Patricia, who left the company in 2019, has recently returned to work alongside her sister. At the InterTabac 2024 event in Germany, Patricia expressed her renewed dedication, stating, “Tobacco has always been my true passion… So happy to be back!”
Under the sisters’ guidance, Quesada Cigars aims to restore its former prestige and regain its influence in the global cigar market. They plan to enhance operations and modernise the company’s systems, bringing a fresh approach to a brand long-rooted in tradition. The sisters have already started addressing challenges that had impacted the Quesada brand in recent years. Their factory in Licey, Dominican Republic, remains the production centre, continuing to manufacture esteemed brands like Casa Magna and Quesada.
In interviews, Raquel and Patricia revealed their excitement about leading the company together, frequently completing each other’s thoughts and discussing their complementary strengths. Raquel stated, “Whatever is in good shape here is going to stay… but where there are possibilities to change for the better, we’re going to do that.”
The Quesada family’s journey has been marked by both triumph and tragedy, yet the bond between Raquel and Patricia reflects a renewed commitment to carry on their legacy. As Raquel and Patricia work to solidify their father’s vision, Quesada Cigars stands poised for a promising future.
