Remembering Ryan Scheper: Illusione’s National Sales Director Passes Away at 42

March 21, 2025 Inspector X 3 min read

The cigar industry has lost one of its own. Ryan Scheper, National Sales Director for Illusione Cigars, passed away at the age of 42. His untimely departure leaves a void in the industry where he had built a reputation for his passion, expertise, and dedication.

Scheper’s journey in the cigar business was marked by unwavering commitment and an exceptional ability to connect with both retailers and consumers. Nearly three years ago, he was announced as the National Sales Director for Illusione, a role he embraced with enthusiasm. Before joining Illusione, Scheper had worked as a regional sales representative for Oliva and Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG), which owns General Cigar Co., honing his skills in an industry he loved.

Dion Giolito, the founder of Illusione, shared his deep respect and admiration for Scheper, recalling how their paths first crossed when Scheper was a sales rep for Oliva Cigars. “Not only was he an exemplary rep, but his solution-based approach within the cigar business was unmatched,” Giolito stated. Years later, when Illusione was searching for a new Sales and Marketing Director, Scheper took the initiative and drove directly to Reno to pitch himself for the role—a move that secured him the position on the spot. “His tenacity and broad-based knowledge of the industry were unmatched. He was forward-thinking, resourceful, and most of all, a true friend and confidant,” Giolito added.

Chris Tarr, Vice President of Marketing at STG and one of Scheper’s closest friends, spoke of the indelible mark he left on those around him. “Although Ryan is no longer here, his spirit will always remain in the laughter we all shared, the lessons we learned together, and the memories we created. A true friend never really leaves; they live on in our hearts forever.”

Scheper’s passing was confirmed by his father, Marshall Scheper, who expressed the deep sorrow of losing his son. “Ryan took his last breath Tuesday, at 2:47 Indiana time, surrounded by his family. This is by far the hardest thing I’ve ever been through. He was such a great kid, and I was so proud of him.”

At this time, no details have been provided regarding services or memorial arrangements. However, the impact of Ryan Scheper’s life and career will be felt throughout the cigar community for years to come. His passion, hard work, and friendship made him a beloved figure in the industry, and he will be deeply missed.

Our thoughts go out to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
