Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real Nicaragua Profundo Debuts with Dark Oscuro Wrapper
Romeo y Julieta will expand its Nicaraguan portfolio in mid-March with the Reserva Real Nicaragua Profundo. The release revisits the concept behind Reserva Real Nicaragua, this time with a darker, extra-fermented wrapper grown on Nicaraguan soil.
A Return to Nicaragua with A.J. Fernandez
Five years ago, A.J. Fernandez created a Nicaraguan interpretation of the traditionally Dominican Reserva Real. Altadis U.S.A. has now asked him to take that idea further.
The result is the Reserva Real Nicaragua Profundo. The cigar uses entirely Nicaraguan tobacco, including the wrapper. Fernandez grew the wrapper leaf on his own farms.
This project continues a familiar partnership. Fernandez once again collaborated with Rafael Nodal, vice president of product capability for Tabacalera USA.
Blend Character and Wrapper Focus
Profundo delivers a medium-to-full-bodied profile. The defining feature is its dark oscuro wrapper. Nodal describes the leaf as extra fermented, which deepens colour and flavour.
The darker wrapper signals a richer direction for the line. It also sets Profundo apart from both the original Reserva Real and the earlier Reserva Real Nicaragua.
While Altadis has not disclosed detailed tasting notes, the blend aims to balance strength with refinement. The wrapper leads the experience, supported by Nicaraguan binder and filler tobaccos.
Four Sizes, Broad Appeal
Altadis will release Profundo in four vitolas. Each size targets a different smoking preference while maintaining consistent pricing.
Vitolas and Pricing
Robusto: 5 x 50 – $11.25
Toro: 6 x 54 – $11.90
Magnum: 6 x 60 – $12.95
Churchill: 7 x 50 – $12.75
All sizes ship in 25-count boxes, except the Magnum. The Magnum comes packed in boxes of 20.
Visual Identity and Packaging
The band introduces a new colour direction. Its purple tone blends elements from two earlier releases. It combines the red of the original Reserva Real with the blue used on Reserva Real Nicaragua.
That design choice visually reinforces the cigar’s hybrid identity. Profundo bridges Dominican heritage and Nicaraguan character.
Continuing a Strategic Collaboration
Altadis has leaned heavily on Nicaragua for several modern Romeo y Julieta releases. Profundo strengthens that strategy. The cigar underscores the ongoing collaboration between Fernandez and Nodal.
With an all-Nicaraguan blend and a dark wrapper grown in-house, Profundo represents the deepest expression of the Reserva Real Nicaragua concept to date.
