The Netherlands is getting more pigs

March 2, 2022 Inspector Z 3 min read

The Netherlands is getting more pigs. The Kentucky Fire Cured Flying Pigs. At the Dutch Big Smoke on September 14th and 15, Jonathan Drew will personally launch the cigars. It’s the fourth Drew Estate Flying Pig that will be on the market in The Netherlands. The three Undercrown Flying Pigs are already for sale.

The story of the Flying Pig

The original Flying Pig saw the light in 2009. Steve Saka, back then CEO of the Nicaraguan cigar manufacturer, discovered the vital in a catalog. It was a turn of the century catalog of an old American cigar brand. He was intrigued by the shape, and the Flying Pig was born. First only as a limited edition for the Liga Privada No.9. Then the T52 followed. And the Undercrown Flying Pig XLR, which was limited to 200 boxes exclusively for The Netherlands. A bigger size Liga Privada Unico Flying Pig was released under the name Feral Flying Pig. And then slowly all other natural lines within the Drew Estate portfolio started having Flying Pigs.

When Drew Estate was represented by The Longfiller Company in The Netherlands, a few boxes of Liga Privada #9, Liga Privada T52, and Feral Flying Pigs made it to the country. And together with Compaenen, a group of independent tobacconists, Drew Estate and Longfiller Company released the Undercrown Flying Pig as an exclusive. Two years later, the cigars were released worldwide. When Royal Agio took over distribution for Drew Estate in The Netherlands and a few other European countries, the Undercrown Flying Pig was re-introduced. The Undercrown Sun Grown Flying Pig and the Undercrown Shade Flying Pig followed. And now Drew Estate and Royal Agio are launching the Drew Estate KFC Flying Pig in The Netherlands.

Kentucky Fire Cured

When Drew Estate introduced their KFC, Kentucky Fire Cured, lines it was a shock to the industry, Many saw it as something new, but it is actually a century technique to cure the tobacco leaves. The leaves are dried with the heat from open flames, in special curing barns instead of being air-cured. The tobacco from Kentucky and Virginia gets a special flavor because of the smoke. American grown tobaccos, fire-cured, mixed with Nicaraguan tobaccos create a unique blend that most people describe at ‘barbecue’. The 4⅛x60 Flying Pig will be introduced at the Dutch Big Smoke. After the Big Smoke, Royal Agio will distribute the cigars to selected retailers all over the country.
