Trump Administration Announces 90-day Tariff Pause

April 10, 2025 Inspector X 2 min read

Today, the Trump administration announced a 90-day pause on new tariffs for most U.S. trading partners, temporarily reducing rates to a uniform 10% to support ongoing trade negotiations. This development follows last week’s rollout of a broad reciprocal tariff framework that raised duties on imports from nearly all U.S. partners. In sharp contrast, tariffs on Chinese imports were escalated to 125% effective immediately, with President Trump citing China’s “lack of respect” for global markets.

This policy shift carries implications for the premium cigar industry. While the Dominican Republic and Honduras remain subject to the 10% tariff imposed last week, Nicaragua—the world’s largest producer of premium cigars—saw its tariff rate reduced from 18% to 10%. This substantial reduction eases pressure on importers and supports continued product flow into the U.S. market.

Mike Copperman, Executive Director of Cigar Rights of America, stated: “The tariff pause is a welcome development for our industry; however, we remain vigilant on finding a sustainable solution as any long-term uncertainty in trade policy has real economic consequences for our small business industry and our core partner countries.”

While the 90-day pause offers short-term relief, the long-term trade outlook remains unclear. The coming weeks and the negotiations between producer countries will be critical in determining future cost structures and supply chain stability for premium cigar manufacturers.
