Weekly news week 23 2021
Weekly news week 23 2021. The first Sunday of each month is dedicated to a legendary man or woman in the cigar industry. And this time, it is not about a master blender or a tobacco grower. This weeks’ special is about a man who saved the oldest cigar factory in Nicaragua. Without Dr. Martinez Cuenca, there would be no Joya de Nicaragua and we would be missing out on some of our favorite cigars.
Reviews
Two reviews of Cuban cigars this week. Both of the same brand. And the same vitola. But one of them is a Diplomatic gift that comes in a different box than the regular production. There are rumors that the blend is different as well, so we put it to the test. We smoked and reviewed a Cohiba Lancero from a diplomatic box and a regular production Cohiba Lancero. To make it fair, both are from the same production month.

New cigars
There was a lot of news this week. Plenty of new cigars. At the 11th Russian Habanos day, the exclusive Habanos distributor to Russia debuted the Quai d’Orsay Acuerdo Exclusivo Russia. And in a collaboration with Cigar Cult, the second Art Nouveau jar. Davidoff releases its annual Davidoff Exclusives, this year to commemorate Zino Davidoff.
There is a new cigar from Cigar Clowns and the Limited Cigar Association is responsible for the distribution. The Ron draws inspiration from Ronald McDonald, probably the most famous clown except for Steven King’s Pennywise. The German online retailer Clubcigarren and Maya Selva collaborate on SWAT, a new brand in innovative packaging. And later this year, Dunbarton Tobacco and Trust is releasing a Mi Querida Triqui Traca 448 Short Robusto.

More news
Crowned Heads is releasing the annual limited Las Calaveras in four sizes. Arturo Fuente ships the June shipment of the Heaven and Earth series. It is 135 years ago that Melanio Oliva planted his first tobacco. Oliva Cigars celebrates that with an Oliva Series V 135th Anniversary Limitada. Ashton Cigars adds a Churchill to the San Cristobal Quintessence line. In international markets, this cigar has the name Paradiso Quintessence.
Fratello changes the packaging of the Camo line. Previously the cigars came in bundles of 15. But customer demand made Fratello change the bundles to 25 cigars. Illusione adds a Candela wrapper on the ~cg:4~ as a PCA exclusive cigar. But international distributors can get the cigar as well. Southern Draw adds two sizes to the Manzanita line. And finally, Tatuaje is adding a Sumatra and Broadleaf wrapper to the T110.
Other news
A year ago, Gurkha was in hot water. All because of racially insensative and flat-out racist comments from the founder, CEO, and owner Kaizad Hansotia. Hansotia stepped down and promised to sell his shares. What is the status now, a year later? We kept following the situation closely. And a personal friend threw his life around. From morbidly obese he went to being skinny and active. Later this month, on his 40th birthday, he is raising money for Pronica by doing 10.000 stair steps. That was the weekly news for week 23 of 2021.
